Sara Bareilles and “a classical piece by some old dude”

Updated: Jul 15, 2020

By: Sophia Li, PRIMO, Harvard College '21

Our first coffeehouse of the summer kicked off with some amazing musical performances from our HSURV fellows! This “staple of the HSURV village” is a casual open mic-style time for people to share their talents with the community. Daniel Huaracha started us off with a violin performance of “Son de la Negra,” a traditional mariachi song, followed by Marcus Trenfield who played a variety of classical and pop selections on the piano, including “a classical piece by some old dude,” i.e. Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Abby Obeng-Marnu then whipped out some lovely guitar accompaniment (after not practicing for a year) for her even lovelier voice and slayed “Break My Heart Again” by Finneas and Sara Bareilles’s “Gravity." We were then treated to a performance by the queen herself, as proctor and organizer Julia Losner graced us with performances of “Caledonia” and “King of Anything”. We concluded with Sophia Li’s performance of “Breaking Free” (with a YouTuber singing Troy’s part) from High School Musical.

Huge claps to all the performers and thank you to everyone who came out to support your HSURV friends!
