HSURV 2020!

Naturally Curious

HSURV 2020 is where all disciplines meet and create a research hotspot!

Home: Welcome

Dear HSURV fellows,

The unjust and tragic killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and too many more members of the Black community are the manifestations of racist policing and systemic inequities prevalent in our country. These murders embody the horrifying antithesis of our community values, and we condemn this targeted violence. Black lives matter, and we must join in the important work being done to dismantle the white supremacist institutions that threaten them.

The mission of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village has always been to foster diversity and inclusion in a rich, vibrant environment dedicated to intellectual growth and community. As we strive towards this mission, we must recognize the structural barriers to its actualization at Harvard and beyond and fight them in any and all ways possible.

As your proctors and program assistants, we want to affirm you and offer ourselves as resources in these difficult times. In particular, we want to offer our support and solidarity to the Black members of the research village in whatever capacity we may be useful. You are all valued members of this community, and your voices will be heard.

WHAT IS THE HARVARD SUMMER UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH VILLAGE?

The Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village (HSURV) was initiated in response to a recommendation of the 2005 Harvard University Task Force on Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). The first program, initiated in summer 2006, was PRISE (the Harvard College Program in Science and Engineering). It was charged with developing a diverse, residential community of Harvard College undergraduate scientists conducting research with faculty over ten weeks during the summer. In 2011, PRISE was joined by BLISS (Building Learning through Inquiry in the Social Sciences—formerly the Behavioral Laboratory in the Social Sciences), a joint project of Harvard College and the FAS Division of Social Sciences, and PRIMO (the Program for Research in Markets and Organizations), a collaboration of the College and the Harvard Business School. 2013 marked the first year of SHARP (the Summer Humanities and Undergraduate Research Program). In 2015 SURGH (Summer Undergraduate Research program in Global Health) joined us, and 2017 included the first program dedicated to community engagement, PCER (Mindich Program in Community-Engaged Research, off-campus again this summer), filling out the complete interdisciplinary structure of the Summer Undergraduate Research Village. The Research Village consists of planned academic and social activities in a residential setting, yet relies heavily on the active participation of the Fellows to create their own opportunities for engagement with their colleague Fellows.
