Pirates of the Charles: The Curse of the Power Boats

It was an early start on Sunday morning for the kayaking party. We met at 8:50AM in the guard’s office, a bit bleary eyed, but excited for the coming action on the water.

When we arrived there was a safety questionnaire which we collectively tackled – and then we were let loose onto the water!

A member of the Harvard crew squad, who shall remain anonymous, could be heard shouting – ‘This isn’t anything like crew!’, how do I know when to put my blade in the water without a cox to tell me when?’

Despite these teething issues, we kayaked and floated our way down the Charles towards the downtown heart of the city. It was a beautiful morning and the view of the city was stunning.

On the way back, pairs lined up for a race back towards one of the bridges – to see who really were the masters of the waters. Accounts from the race differ about which pair won. Whilst some say that Charlie and Aleeza were the fastest, the moral victory certainly wasn’t theirs, as they shamelessly splashed and threw balls at other crews throughout the affair.

Once back we stood in the sun to dry off, and rounded the morning off with a series of group photos.

All in all, the morning was a great success! A big thank you to the organisers!
